Education and Awareness

The University of Kentucky struggles successfully implicating the tobacco free policy throughout campus. Education and awareness about the University’s tobacco-free policy is key to compliance. If students are made aware of the restricted boundaries and the health and safety precautions, it will help spread awareness on the policy and will overall better implement defiance.

Often time’s the people who choose to use tobacco related products don’t know they are breaking the guidelines at all. If these people are properly educated on health defects, boundaries, and the overall policy itself, we can help decrease the number of users on campus.

Evidence that our campus is tobacco free is often times just a small sign with a cigarette crossed out. Although signs are good, it doesn’t get the message across that tobacco products are prohibited all across campus. Creating a more pro-active way in educating everyone who comes across campus will generate effective efforts in eliminating any unanswered questions and confusion. Students who don’t see this as an issue need to be made aware of the health effects second hand smoking can have on people.

Generating a community with healthy and mindful intentions will influence those who decide to defy the tobacco free policy. In order for incoming students to schedule classes, they must first complete a quiz on alcohol use and sexual assault. Putting in place a similar idea would help students acknowledge the University of Kentucky’s tobacco free policy and educate them on the proper knowledge they need to distinguish about our campus.

With the amount of construction happening all around our campus, members need to be made aware that our campus is tobacco free. Not just constructor workers but visitors and faculty. Our University needs to set standards high with implementing this. If you step foot on our University you need to be made aware that tobacco products are prohibited. Signs that don’t just have a graphic but information that follows alongside our policy should sporadically be placed everywhere. It is our duty as members in our community to enforce rules set in place for the health and safety of those around us.

When more people are educated and aware, more people are willing to stand up against misconduct. Knowing there are violation forms and clubs you can join to prevent deviancy should be known to the general public. Creating positive gateways to ensure our policy is taken seriously is what will bring our campus together and promote a safer and healthier campus.
